Aerospace vehicle applications have always been at the cutting edge of structures and materials research because of the essential requirement for lightweight construction as well as the need to combine safety with performance. New advanced materials, such as composites with toughened thermosetting matrices, thermoplastic composites, and metal-matrix or ceramic-matrix composites, are constantly proposed. In addition to the ongoing challenge of developing new materials, many research issues remain open regarding conventional metallic aero-structures. These include life extension in aging aircraft, and proper methods of vibration control. These 19 peer-reviewed papers gather together the latest knowledge related to the “Behaviour of Material and Composite Structures” title of this volume.

It is noticeable that superalloys have regained their momentum. The worldwide effort to increase the efficiency and extend the lifetime of energy conversion facilities depends upon improved materials and manufacturing techniques. Materials are now expected to exhibit outstanding mechanical strength and creep resistance at high temperatures, as well as a good corrosion and oxidation resistance. Superalloys have this potential, but many of the commercial grades are still based upon metallurgical concepts that date back to the 1980s, and have typically been exploited so far in only a few prominent areas of application. Improvement in their high-temperature capability, and the adaption of manufacturing processes to new fields of application, present major challenges to current researchers in industry and academia. These papers, published within the context of the first European Symposium on Superalloys, present the current state of progress in the development, production and properties of cast, wrought and powder-metallurgical superalloys and associated coating systems. They represent a timely and invaluable guide to the subject.

These proceedings comprise the refereed papers presented at the International Conference on Advanced Material Research (ICAMR 2011) held on January 21 - 23, 2011 in Chongqing, China. The main goal of this, and other events, was to provide an international scientific forum for the exchange of new ideas in a number of fields via in-depth discussions with peers from around the world. Both inward research; core areas of advanced materials research and outward research; multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary research and applications were covered; thus providing a thorough overview of the subject.

Composite materials are increasingly finding use in diverse applications requiring a wide range of property and performance requirements. Low density, high specific strength and stiffness are the main features that make composite materials most suitable for structural applications. The field covers the concurrent manipulation of the material’s composition and of the internal architecture of the composite in order to obtain the desired properties. The ability to tailor composite materials precisely is of great importance in structural applications. A systematic approach to the optimum tailoring of composite materials is a challenging design problem. The focus should be on the practical design aspects, and that is what is addressed in this special-topic volume.
