Magnesium alloys are among the most promising ecomaterials for various high-tech applications in the 21st Century. This 2-volume set comprises the proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Platform Science and Technology for Advanced Magnesium Alloys (PSTAM 2003). The papers cover a wide spread of perspectives on the academic fundamentals, and industrial applications, of magnesium alloys.

Description: Wide-bandgap semiconductors such as silicon carbide (SiC) and group-III Nitrides have attracted increasing attention as favored materials short-listed for use in new electronic devices; especially those destined for high-power, high-frequency and/or high-temperature applications, as well as short-wavelength light-emitters. This two-volume set contains >illustrated transcripts of papers presented at the International Conference on Silicon Carbide and Related Materials 2001 (ICSCRM2001), held in the Fall of 2001 at Tsukuba, Japan. This timely conference was held in the very first year of the 21st century; an era in which SiC devices are going to find a real market. More than 500 contributors; both academic scientists and device engineers, from 20 countries, discussed and exchanged ideas extensively during the five days of the conference.

Description: This issue covers, in the form of abstracts, the work which has been reported between the previous retrospective and the end of 2001. The choice of abstracts is guided by criteria such as accessibility, data content and description of important new techniques, phenomena or anomalies. But there is also a thorough coverage of more qualitative features of diffusion and defect phenomena, computer modelling and theory. The volume also includes, as usual, a number of invited review and experimental papers which treat a wide range of topics in the field.
The more theoretical review papers presented here cover the modelling of intergranular segregation and diffusion in alloys, as well as the impact of electron theory. The more practical aspects of diffusion are described by reviews concerning interdiffusion in coatings and long-term thermomechanical behaviour.

The degradation of materials and coatings in aggressive environments continues to be of great relevance to a wide range of industrial applications. The topic is of vital economic concern to the transportation, energy generation, and chemical processing industries in the developing, as well as the developed, nations of the world. The dual thrusts of conservation of resources and protection of the environment here strongly influence the tone of the technical submissions and thus again reflect the world-wide concern.

Description: This book presents ten chapters on the science and engineering of durable surfaces. The first section focusses on various types of surfaces and advanced coating processes, while the second part concentrates particularly on thermal barrier coatings. The book covers both, in-depth state-of-the-art reviews as well as cutting-edge new information emerging from ongoing research:

Online since: January 2000
Description: Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS).
This book covers the principal topics of basic and applied research on diffusion-controlled transport phenomena in metals, ceramics and other systems. Particular attention is paid to diffusional mass transport, reactive diffusion, interdiffusion and phase transformations. Further attention is paid to the practical aspects of applying a deeper understanding of diffusion and reaction mechanisms to the development of materials with improved service properties.

The theory of interdiffusion, reactive diffusion and defect phenomena, the predictions of computer models, and other theoretical studies are extensively covered. Altogether, this again makes the present work an up-to-date and convenient source of information on current trends in the field of solid-state diffusion.

This work represents a new approach to ceramics research. The mechanical properties of ceramics and ceramic-based composites are well understood and have been studied extensively in the past. This more profound understanding of physical properties, such as particularly low or high thermal conductivities, radiation penetration depth, electrical and magnetic responses etc., can now lead to the development of new materials having improved properties.

Description: Metastable and Nanocrystalline Materials offer enormous technological potential and, for this reason, they are the subject of intense world-wide research.
Among the various topics covered in the present volume are the synthesis and processing of materials using mechanical alloying, grinding, mechanosynthesis and mechanochemistry; the structural characterisation of nanophase materials and the structural evolution caused by mechanical treatments; the magnetic and mechanical properties of nanocrystalline materials; and the basic mechanisms of fabrication processes.
