Description: The present edition of the International Conference on Semi-Solid Processing of Alloys and Composites (S2P) is the 17th of a series of conferences on semisolid processing of metals and composites started in 1990 in France. The topics of interest are many: development of innovative materials and composites, microstructural and mechanical characterization, semi-solid material preparation and related technologies, modelling and simulation, industrial applications, interactions between semisolid processing and additive manufacturing. As known, semisolid processing is a foundry process in which the mold is filled with partially solid metal, instead of liquid metal. This allows to avoid a turbulent flow of the liquid metal, leading to lower porosities due to gas entrapment, while ensuring optimum filling of the die, even when thin walls are present. Also, shrinkage porosities are reduced since the alloy is partially solid during the mold filling. These features, typical only of semisolid processing, are gaining new interest, for instance, for the production of heat sinks with complex geometries and thin walls as the one used in electric vehicles. In addition, mechanical properties are improved, as well as the corrosion and wear resistance, due to the peculiar globular microstructure, resulting in the possibility to manufacture high-performance structural components. At the same time, the metal fills the die at a lower temperature than in conventional foundry process, resulting in a prolonged lifetime of the die. Last but not least, the surface finish of these castings is extremely good. The conference has been organized by the Italian Association of Metallurgy (AIM) and the University of Brescia (Italy).

Description: This volume of Diffusion Foundations is entitled Advances in Mass and Thermal Transport in Engineering Materials. The volume was designed to capture a very wide cross-section of research in the area in both experimental and modelling of mass and thermal transport and at both basic and applied levels. It is now very well recognized that the mass and thermal transport processes in engineering materials underpin much of the advance in the development of new materials and the improvement of existing materials. Whether it be the ongoing enhancement of the engineering properties of materials, the materials processing, the in-service longevity of materials or the recycling of materials, mass and thermal transport very frequently play direct and essential roles.

Description: Diffusion is an omnipresent, but the important phenomenon in a wide variety of disciplines and applications in physical, chemical, biological, geologic, materials science and engineering processes. While diffusion-controlled phase transformations involve in a variety of materials processes, ranging from solidification to different solid-state transformations. Modeling of diffusion and diffusion-controlled phase transformations in alloys has been of long-standing fundamental interests because advance modeling can help to improve the understanding of complex materials processes. Moreover, as the recent boost in Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) and Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) projects, additional emphasis on the necessity and urgency of the quantitative modeling of diffusion and diffusion-controlled phase transformations in alloys has been laying, which can provide useful information for accelerating the novel alloys design. Consequently, the purpose of this book, entitled "Modeling of Diffusion and Diffusion-Controlled Phase Transformations in Alloys" is to provide a collection of the commonly used computational approaches for modeling diffusion and diffusion-controlled phase transformations, as well as their current status, recent developments, future trends and applications in different alloys.
