The development of new materials with specific properties is discussed such as metal hydride systems. Other active areas of research include in this volume is the surface engineering to locally enhance properties: electro deposition, electrostatic spray assisted vapor deposition (ESAVD) and aerosol assisted chemical vapor deposition. This includes creating metallic glass coatings with high strength and corrosion resistance, cermet coatings with good wear resistance, as well as functional thin films and Nano composite coatings. The work presented here is characterized by a synthesis of experimental research and numerical modeling of the mechanical behavior of materials at different length scales, and the application of models developed to analyze structural parts.

This book contains some 32 peer reviewed papers on applications of nanotechnology in energy and environment. Some of the papers describe the development of nanoparticle-based solar cells, new technique for decomposing organic pollutant in water and, using nanotechnology in oil recovery especially for heavy oil lifting. Synthesis, characterizations, and applications of nanomaterial are also discussed. This book will be a good reference for researchers in the corresponding field.

Description: This special collection provides up-to-date knowledge concerning the field of functional materials such as shape memory alloys, piezoelectric ceramics and aluminium alloys. The articles therein also deal with recent investigations of quasicrystals and geopolymers: two classes of hybrid material that have attracted great scientific interest, given their unusual properties and potential engineering applications.
Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS).
In the first part, the papers address key issues concerning the application of two classes of functional alloy: (i) NiTi alloys, having important applications in the fields of smart structures and bioengineering; and (ii) CuAlBe alloys, as applied to non-welded pipe joints. In both classes, the papers focus upon industrial-scale examples associated with two classical metallurgical processes (electron-beam and conventional melting techniques).
