Description: The 2010 Annual British Society for Strain Measurement Conference is the seventh in the series on Advances in Experimental Mechanics, and the fifth time that the papers have been presented as a volume in the Applied Mechanics and Materials series.

The 61 papers making up this volume reflect strikingly the diverse nature of experimental mechanics. The fourteen sessions address various disciplines: e.g. aerospace, mechanical and civil engineering and state-of-the-art technologies such as biomechanics, novel sensors, and composite and cellular materials. The papers were contributed by workers in both academia and industry; with half of the contributions coming from outside of the UK: thus reflecting the international flavour of this event. This volume will be essential reading for all of those interested in the subject.

Description: Reducing the dimensions of contiguous matter, down to the nanometer scale, confines the electronic and vibrational wavefunctions and results in unique properties which open up a wide vista of potential applications in optics, mechanics, electrical engineering, magnetic devices, catalysis and biomedicine. Nanostructures, characterized by having at least one dimension in the nanometer range, are considered to be a bridge between single molecules and their bulk counterparts. The challenge for nanotechnology is to achieve perfect control of the nanoscale-related properties; which obviously requires correlating the parameters of synthesis with the resultant nanostructures. Nanostructures are also ideal subjects for computer simulation and modeling: in computations related to nanomaterials, one deals with a spatial scaling ranging from a few nanometers to a few micrometers and a time-scaling ranging from a few femto-seconds (fs) to 1 second - with a limit of accuracy better than 1 kcal mol-1.

Nanocomposite materials constitute a rapidly evolving field of science and technology, of which the first applications are already on the market and many more are expected to follow. The admixture of relatively low amounts of nanoparticles (these are, by definition, any morphology having at least one dimension in the nano-range, i.e. particles, fibres, plates) within a matrix of polymer, ceramic or metal has a dramatic increasing effect upon the resultant properties (volume, surface and functional properties). Unusual property combinations can be obtained; resulting in a new class of materials for almost every application.
Nanocomposite materials constitute a rapidly evolving field of science and technology, of which the first applications are already on the market and many more are expected to follow. Description: Organic electroluminescence (OEL) is the phenomenon of electrically-driven emission of light from organic materials; including both fluorescent and phosphorescent organic solids. The organic light-emitting device (OLED), which exploits OEL emission from organic semiconducting thin films (with thicknesses of less than a few hundred nanometers), sandwiched between electrodes, has attracted keen interest in its application to flat-panel displays, due to its high luminous efficiency, low driving voltage, tunable colors as well as a convenient device-structure design and low fabrication costs when compared with every other known display device.
