The subjects covered in this special collection are all related to fatigue, corrosion-fatigue, elastoplastic fracture, damage, mixed-mode loading, brittle layers, the effects of boriding, short cracks, residual strength and many other topics. In all of the cases considered, the solutions obtained are based upon theory, experimental results and, in some cases are complemented by numerical analysis.

This special-topic volume reports on new progress made in the analysis and understanding of fracture and damage mechanics. The Finite Element Method is a well-established analytical tool for theoretical fracture analysis. The development of interface elements which combine aspects of both fracture and damage mechanics has permitted the prediction of both crack initiation and propagation. A number of the papers presented here deal with their use and further development.

The recent utilization of nano-sized powders and porous materials has led to the expectation that it will lead to basic breakthrough solutions for prospective nanomaterial products offering high performance and multi-functionalism. For this reason, many industrial countries have financially supported nanostructured materials development and their use in technical innovation.
