Description: THERMEC 2021 is the 11th International Conference on advanced materials built upon the proven concept and continues the tradition of its seven predecessors, Japan - 1988, Australia - 1997, USA - 2000, Spain - 2003, Canada - 2006, Germany - 2009, Canada - 2011, Las Vegas/USA - 2013, Graz/Austria - 2016, Paris/France - 2018 and Vienna/Austria - 2020. This conference series provides a forum for researchers around the globe to present results on recent advances in the field of materials science and technology of processing and manufacturing of advanced materials. The conference covers aspects of processing, fabrication, structure/property relationships, and applications of both ferrous and non-ferrous materials including biomaterials, materials for aerospace, and other advanced materials.

Description: The majority of materials, especially metals, are used in the form of polycrystals. It is well recognized that many properties of polycrystalline materials are determined by grain boundaries (GBs). Grain boundaries appreciably affect many practically important mechanical and physical properties of construction materials. Grain-boundary diffusion plays a key role in such practically important processes as Coble creep, sintering, diffusion induced grain boundary migration (DIGM), various discontinuous reactions, recrystallization and grain growth. The purpose of this Volume is to provide a collection of recent contributions in the field of structure, thermodynamics and diffusion properties of grain boundaries and interfaces. The Volume includes reviews of both experimental and theoretical studies carried out by well-recognized scientists whose publications are well-known and widely cited.

There are continuous demands for high performance materials with enhanced properties. In the development of these materials and their processing methods, physical and numerical simulations have important roles to play. By using best current knowledge and modern facilities, these simulation techniques can enable the rapid and economic evaluation and prediction of high temperature processes and applications. The papers deal extensively with physical and numerical simulation, the modeling of processes, as well as recent advances in the processing of various materials, e.g., steels, light metals, composites, etc.

Metals, because of their inherent properties, have been in service to mankind from the Early Periods. Metal craft started turning into metal science in the 19th Century and got matured in 20th century. The present book, to the best of author’s memory, is the first attempt to present the history of metal science in one volume, covering both extractive and physical metallurgy. The book is aimed as a supplementary text book for students in metallurgy and materials science and also selectively for general readers. After a brief introduction (Chapter 1), the second and third chapters are devoted to extractive metallurgy. The chapters related to physical metallurgy (4th to 6th) are written in a sequence such that the description of structures is given first, before highlighting the properties of metals and alloys. The final chapter ‘Future Trends’ highlights various topics in contemporary metal science.

Recrystallization and grain growth are mechanisms that alter the microstructure without necessarily altering the phase. They are typically driven by high internal elastic and surface energies though sometimes other volumetric energy terms appear. The topic is important to materials engineers and scientists and geologists alike. The former typically aim to exert control over the phenomena for technological and economic benefit while the latter often seek in these mechanisms the answers to questions regarding events long gone. This collection of peer-reviewed papers brings together the most up-to-date knowledge in this field.
