The amount of deteriorating bridges is increasing gradually, and the costs of maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of these bridges often far exceed available budgets. To alleviate this issue, the bridge engineering profession continues to take positive steps towards developing more comprehensive bridge monitoring and management systems. This collection of invited papers encompasses some aspects of bridge health monitoring, maintenance and safety. Specifically, it deals with: bridge health monitoring; bridge repair and rehabilitation issues; bridge related safety and other implications.

Description: These papers were presented at the Third International Workshop on the Performance, Protection and Strengthening of Structures under Extreme Loading - Protect2011 - held in Lugano (Switzerland) from August 30th to September 1st, 2011. This event sprang from the cross-border cooperation between two universities, SUPSI and Politecnico di Milano, which have long been engaged in research in these particular areas. Protect2011 is a clear sign that such collaboration offers the opportunity for mutual growth, to the benefit of all.

Composite materials are increasingly finding use in diverse applications requiring a wide range of property and performance requirements. Low density, high specific strength and stiffness are the main features that make composite materials most suitable for structural applications. The field covers the concurrent manipulation of the material’s composition and of the internal architecture of the composite in order to obtain the desired properties. The ability to tailor composite materials precisely is of great importance in structural applications. A systematic approach to the optimum tailoring of composite materials is a challenging design problem. The focus should be on the practical design aspects, and that is what is addressed in this special-topic volume.
