Significant progress has been made over the past 30 years in handling silicon-based ceramics such as silicon nitride, silicon carbide, SiAlON, silicides and composites. A better understanding of processing parameters in various forming techniques, and of microstructure-property relationships, has led to substantial improvements in thermomechanical performance and reliability; as well as in cost reduction.

Composite materials have come to play essential roles in various areas of industry and technology during the past few decades due to their excellent performance. In order to exchange innovative ideas and technical information in this area, Chinese scientists on both sides of the Taiwan Strait have already met twice since 2000. The 3rd cross-strait conference on composite materials was held on May 7-12, 2003, in Wuhan, China; sponsored by the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).
