Description:

The present publication arises as a result of the cooperation between the Institute of Production Technologies (IPT), belonging to the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology (MTF) of the Slovak University of Technology (STU) and TRANS TECH PUBLICATIONS INC. For the fifth time, the book aims at publishing scientific achievements on the Materials Science and Production Technologies fields, as well as at enhancing the worldwide cooperation and recognition among young and senior academicians and/or practitioners. Some of the main topics included in the book are those related but not limited to the trends in Materials Science and their application in industry, e.g.: composites and biomaterials, polymers, materials weldability, analysis of metals and alloys, numerical analyses and simulation of materials, etc. Most of these topics keep a direct relation to the production technologies and systems and thus, always keeping a special focus on the materials used, there are also topics in the book addressing key production processes, technologies and systems.

Description: This book contains selected contributions presented on the 14th conference “Contribution of Metallography to Production Problem Solutions” held on 6 – 8 June 2017 in the Mariánské Lázně, Czech Republic. The conference was focused on application of metallography in industrial practice - for solution of production problems, elucidation of premature failure of machine components and constructions during service, breakdowns or accidents. In addition some results of new research projects which could improve manufacturing technology or quality of machine parts are presented. Individual papers deal with failure causes and fracture mechanism, insufficient material properties and incorrect function of the components. Using metallographic analyses, which include light and electron microscopy, spectroscopic methods, physical methods for detection of defects, material structures are investigated. Results are correlated with material properties and recommendations for production technologies improvement are given.

Description:

The book covers a broad range of topics related to damage and failure of structural materials and parts. The collection contains the results of research and analysis of the fracture behavior of the materials that are subject to fatigue and extreme plastic deformation including analysis of the failures caused by stress concentrators such as welded joints. Several papers focus on the structural design of engineering parts and prediction of their lifespan based on the knowledge of damage processes. The materials combine aspects of experimental, theoretical and computational investigations with an emphasis on the direct applications in engineering.

The book was comprised of the papers presented at the conference "New Methods of Damage and Failure Analysis of Structural Parts" (November 01-04, 2016, Yokohama, Japan).
