Materials science is a key field in science and technology, and is indispensable for providing the groundwork for the next technological generation. Ceramics, in particular, advanced rapidly during the 20th century. Although current society now faces numerous difficulties with regard to recycling, energy conservation, environmental pollution and safety/reliability issues, ceramics are sure to play an important role in overcoming them.

Electroceramics are among the most interesting and useful materials for electronic devices, and various other high-technology applications. The present volume discusses dielectric, piezoelectric, semiconductive, ionically conducting and superconductive materials. Special emphasis is placed on the characterization of these materials, including computer simulations, and on the fabrication procedures for bulk and thin film ceramics on the submicronmeter scale. Important results are reported on grain boundary phenomena and the effects of various crystal and surface structures on the technologically important properties of electroceramics.

Description: This volume presents the most recent results concerning the various approaches to obtaining light emission from silicon.

This dream of silicon technologists is inspired by the fact that an efficient and stable silicon light emitting device would open the way to the production of monolithic optoelectronic integrated circuits, that were based entirely upon silicon. In fact, some of the main building blocks of optoelectronic devices, such as waveguides and photodetectors have already been developed by using silicon technology. The above possibility would sharply reduce the price of optoelectronic circuits as compared with hybrid ones.

Description: The physics of ordered materials is much better understood than that of disordered materials. The lack of a long-range periodic structure makes it difficult to develop the theory of disordered phases. It is not surprising that it is often found difficult to interpret experimental data on these systems.
