Description: Mechanical spectroscopy is a non-destructive technique that is very well suited for studying the dynamics of singularities such as structural defects in solids. It has been successfully applied in solid state physics and materials science for more than fifty years, and the present textbook aims at summarising the state-of-the-art in this field by presenting recent results obtained in Western European laboratories. The contents are divided into nine chapters. Introduction to mechanical spectroscopy (Ch.1) is based on a complete description of the elastic, viscoelastic, and viscoplastic behaviours of solids. The anelastic response is analysed from three different viewpoints: phenomenology, rheology and thermodynamics.

Description: Understanding the behaviour of hydrogen in metals is one of the most pressing research tasks in the physical sciences. The embrittling effect of hydrogen in mild steel was recognised from the very beginnings of the Industrial Revolution, and its effects still plague modern alloys during either fabrication or use. At the same time, the tendency of certain alloys to form stable hydrides in a reversible manner holds out the promise of the safe storage of hydrogen in vehicles and therefore the prospect of non-polluting transport and a true 'hydrogen economy'. Researchers in this field will therefore welcome the publication of this 2-volume set, "Hydrogen Metal Systems I & II", which presents comprehensive information and critical data concerning ionic and metallic hydrides; all conveniently based upon a periodic-table layout.

Description: Much of the success of composites can be attributed to the development of innovative processes. Many useful composites are envisaged by materials scientists but the problem of how to make them is often the greater hurdle.
This process-oriented book focuses on the basic principles of composite fabrication. Upon studying these processes, one is immediately struck by the diversity of ideas and techniques. In some cases, these have been borrowed from other technologies and were designed for use with quite different materials. In other cases some very clever new means have been developed which take account of the characteristics of metals and ceramics and the higher temperatures which are typically involved in their processing.

Description: The purpose of this book is to discuss the properties of non-metallic elements, when dissolved as a minor impurity in liquid metals and alloys, in terms of statistical thermodynamics, quantum mechanics and the latest structural models. The behaviour of non-metallic elements in liquid metals is one of the most important problems in metallurgical and physical chemistry, since it plays a central role in the manufacture of metallic materials.

Description: These Proceedings provide a picture of the current knowledge and technology of heat treatment and surface engineering. Most recent developments concerning the thermodynamics and kinetics of the underlying processes are presented here. Special emphasis is placed on process control and computer modelling.

Description: Catastrophe theory, which treats the singularities of smooth real-valued functions, refers to the unexpectedness of discontinous effects produced by continuos causes. Examples of this behaviour can be found throughout contemporary science. This theory can unify concepts and nomenclatures which have been in disarray for a long time because of their independent development in different scientific fields. Also, Catastrophe Theory emphazises metastable states, whereas "rigorous" statistical mechanics does not, and even denies their existence.
