Description: This volume contains a collection of papers from International Conference „Wear Processes 2012” which were held in Świnoujście, Poland, from 12 to 14 of September 2012. The Conference is organized periodically and is a continuation of the seminars series concerning “Testing and modelling of complex wear processes”, that are organized since 2003. The Initiator of the Conference is Jarosław Chmiel, PhD. Eng. from Maritime University of Szczecin. The aim of the Conference is a creating a forum of information exchange for researchers dealing with issues of wear phenomena caused by more as one process acting on a material simultaneously, the subject somewhat neglected at most conferences focusing on wear problems. The main topics of the Conference are as follows:- fundamental problems of deterioration and wear of materials.- simple and complex deterioration processes.- hydrogen degradation of materials.- wear processes accelerated by the hydrogen degradation and corrosion.- modeling of wear processes.- causes of abnormally rapid of wear. Since 2010, the Conference is held under the auspices of the European Structural Integrity Society, Technical Committee TC10 “Environmentally Assisted Cracking”.

Aerospace vehicle applications have always been at the cutting edge of structures and materials research because of the essential requirement for lightweight construction as well as the need to combine safety with performance. New advanced materials, such as composites with toughened thermosetting matrices, thermoplastic composites, and metal-matrix or ceramic-matrix composites, are constantly proposed. In addition to the ongoing challenge of developing new materials, many research issues remain open regarding conventional metallic aero-structures. These include life extension in aging aircraft, and proper methods of vibration control. These 19 peer-reviewed papers gather together the latest knowledge related to the “Behaviour of Material and Composite Structures” title of this volume.

Metal-matrix composites (MMCs) have been the subject of scientific investigation and applied research for some three decades, but only in the past few years have these materials become realistic candidates for engineering components such as electronic heat sinks, automotive drive shafts, ground-vehicle brake rotors, fighter-aircraft fins and jet-engine components. This special issue comprises 12 selected peer-reviewed papers covering various aspects of MMCs and highlights the most recent findings in this field. The papers focus mainly on light metal matrix composites, based upon Al, Mg and Ti alloys reinforced with particles, nano-dispersoids and long fibres. The results arise from both experimental investigations and computer simulations and the contributions deal with various key issues: production processes, microstructural characteristics, mechanical behaviour, welding using advanced techniques, workability and tribology. An invaluable and up-to-date guide to the field.
