Review from Ringgold Inc., ProtoView: Selected papers from a June 2008 conference report on various aspects of glass science and glass technology, mutual interactions between the two, and their influence on the glass industry. Papers are presented in sections on glass structure; thermodynamics, rheology, and the glass transition; physical properties of glass; optical, electrical, and magnetic properties of glass; bioglass and chemical durability; nucleation, crystallization, and sintering; glass melting; glass forming and glass production; and ecology and waste materials. Some specific paper topics discussed include the yttria-alumina glasses, transport and relaxation studies of ionic phosphate glasses, stress and strain testing of the strand of E-glass fibers, and convolution models for the dielectric function of glass. Other subjects covered include durability of soda-lime-silica glass containers, dishwasher corrosion of glasses, sulfur functioning during glass melting, and nickel sulphide inclusions in tempered glass. B&w photos are included.
