Structural and Surface Characterization of some Ceramic Coatings Obtained by Plasma Jet Spraying on Metallic Biomaterials Substrates
Abstract:
Because surgical techniques are growing in volume and complexity, the reduction of operational costs based on multi-use surgical instruments has become an important factor and the possibility to improve their durability appear to be very important. Identified solutions to improve surface properties of the surgical instruments made by metallic materials consist of deposition of protective coatings. A lot of methods for coatings and different coating materials like thin layers (TiN, ZrC, TiC, DLC) or ceramics (hydroxiapatite, zirconia) was tested until now by different group. In this experimental study, we perform different coatings on a substrate made by stainless steel type 316L and titanium alloy type Ti6Al4V using hard ceramic biomaterials as coating materials (TiO2 and YSZ - yttria stabilized zirconia) deposited by the method of plasma jet deposition. The obtained coatings was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy coupled with EDS in order to characterize the morphology and composition of the coatings. Also, the XRD analysis was performed. As a general conclusion we can say that TiO2 layers deposited using plasma jet deposition presents the best parameter from the point of view of structure and morphology. Anyway, more studies related to the functional properties of these coatings must be made before to be recognized as a solution to improve the performance of the surgical instruments.
