Description: Increase of aerospace techniques’ weight efficiency, durability and safety is commonly determined by a structure and properties of structural materials and products made by metal forming. In particular, a large plastic strain together with the heat treatment forms a crystallography, physical, mechanical and deformation properties of billets, which hereinafter determines their behavior in metal forming processes and performance.

Description: The “21st Symposium on Composites” covered a wide range of composite-related topics including polymers, metal and ceramic composites, hybrid structures and laminates, coatings, manufacturing technologies, testing and simulation, structural health monitoring, biocomposites and recycling technologies. This conference was organized by “Gemeinschaftsausschuss Verbundwerkstoffe (GAV)” within “Deutsche Gesellschafft für Materialkunde e.V. (DGM)“ in cooperation with the University of Bremen. The book covers a broad range of topics related to damage and failure of structural materials and parts. The collection contains the results of research and analysis of the fracture behavior of the materials that are subject to fatigue and extreme plastic deformation including analysis of the failures caused by stress concentrators such as welded joints. Several papers focus on the structural design of engineering parts and prediction of their lifespan based on the knowledge of damage processes. The materials combine aspects of experimental, theoretical and computational investigations with an emphasis on the direct applications in engineering.

The book was comprised of the papers presented at the conference "New Methods of Damage and Failure Analysis of Structural Parts" (November 01-04, 2016, Yokohama, Japan).

Description: This Special Issue of Key Engineering Materials, commemorating the 90th birthday of Professor Jan Sobota, attempts to provide a flavor of the wide range of his interest in and contributions to structural mechanics and the Finite Element Method. Professor Sobota was an outstanding academic teacher, in both didactic and pedagogical fields, a highly talented research worker, incorporating both theory and engineering practice. His attitude, industriousness, and cordiality brought him a great esteem among his co-workers and a students’ community. He was a pioneer in using the Finite Element Method, Transfer Matrix Method and the Boundary Integrals Method and its numerical modification Boundary Element Method in former Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia and the Czech Republic). Therefore, selected papers in this book are dealing with modeling and analyzing of various reinforced concrete structures and its parts mainly by the FEM. Different problems of structures, e.g. design of complicated structures, defects of structures, determination of wind load on atypical structures, soil-structure interactions, thermal effects, etc.; are involved and their suitable solutions are provided to readers.
