The Mechanism Investigation on Propagation and Coalescence Pattern of Three Internal Plane Flaws in Brittle Materials Yanshuang Guo1 , Weishen Zhu1, a , R.H.C Wong 2 ,Shucai Li1 and Chunjin Lin1 1 Geotechnical & Structural Engineering Research Centre, Shandong University, China 2Department of Civil and Structural Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong a Zhuw@sdu.edu.cn Keywords: pre-existing flaw; coalescence; wrapping crack; fracture mechanism Abstracts: Under the action of compressive load, the growth and coalescence containing flaws in brittle materials (rock and rocklike materials e.g.) will result in the local buckling and global fracture of rockmass.
It is a typical mechanism of fracture in brittle rocks and heterogeneous brittle materials under uniaxial compression consists in propagation of pre-existing flaws and interaction of wing cracks.
In 2-D case, the wing cracks propagation from the inclined flaws are studied with different materials by many researchers, such as Horii, Nemat-Nasser, Peng, et al [2].
So the resin after freezing can be taken as rock-like material.
