Introduction Friction Stir Welding is a solid-state process in which the parent material is plasticised due to heat input generated by friction between a rotating tool and the workpiece material and the plasticised material is simultaneously stirred into a mechanical joint by the tool as it rotates.
At a specific temperature, the material being welded will be optimally plasticised for that specific material and tool geometry combination in order to produce a good quality weld.
