Experimental investigations were conducted on a laboratory scale biofilter, containing mixture of compost and polystyrene inert particles as the filter materials.
Nutrient solution consisted of (g/L): K2HPO4,0.8; KH2PO4,0.2; CaSO4·2H2O, 0.05; MgSO4·7H2O,0.5; (NH4)2SO4,1.0; and FeSO4·7H2O, 0.01 in water. [3] Filter materials The packing material for the bed consisted of a mixture (60:40 v/v) of sieved compost (4 mm and 10mm size granules, 1:1 ratio) and polystyrene inert particles (4 mm size).
The filter material was supported by perforated plate.
