A slag chemistry alone can lead to misleading conclusions.
By combining X ray diffraction, slag chemistry, TDA,DSC, thermodynamic calculations with an examination of the microstructure observed in polish sections, a clearer picture of the slag properties emerge.

This paper studied structures of ceria-carbonate two-phase composites, with an emphasis on the interfacial structures and interactions between the two constituent phases of ceria and carbonate.
The phase structure was analyzed by DSC, XRD and SEM.
The structures and the morphology of the samples were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and especially the Infrared (IR) spectroscopy, by probing the molecular vibration of chemical bonds, directly indicates interfacial chemistry and structures between the constituent phases of the two-phase SDC and carbonate composites.
Results and Discussion Phase structures.
Pure SDC has a fluorite structure, which can be crystallized from the SDC oxalate precursor above 350 o C.

This step is usually done in advanced wet chemistries [6] and is sensitive to both strain in and oxidation of Ge.
Following the epitaxial growth, mesa structures are prepared to expose vertical sections of the stack to the selective etching process.
Finally, the etch selectivity was evaluated on mesa test structures using cross-section Transmission Electron Microscopy (X-TEM).
