The structures of diarylethenes 1a were confirmed by 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3, TMS): δ2.12 (s, 6H, -CH3), 2.73 (s, 3H, -CH3), 7.17 (s, 1H, thiophene-H), 7.787 (s, 1H, phenanthrene-H ), 7.617-7.654 (t, 2H, phenanthrene-H), 7.687-7.707 (t, 2H, phenanthrene-H), 8.056-8.077 (d, 2H, phenanthrene-H), 8.697-8.785 (d, 2H, phenanthrene-H).
