Gaomiaozi (GMZ) bentonite has been chosen as a matrix material of buffer/backfill materials in the deep geological disposal to isolate the high level radioactive waste in China.
In this method, bentonite-sand mixtures are regarded appropriate to be buffer/ backfill materials for its low hydraulic conductivity, high swelling property and good self-sealing capacities, etc.
In China, GMZ bentonite, produced in Gaomiaozi (GMZ) area, Inner Mongolia has been considered as a possible matrix material of buffer/backfill materials in the HLW deep geological disposal project.
