Vacuum deposited IMDA is a good candidate for initial study and subsequent work will investigate exposing copper surfaces to dilute, aqueous solutions of IMDA at low pH to understand how solution chemistry differs from the ideal.
However, upon annealing to 400 K small areas of an ordered structure were seen by STM and a weak LEED pattern was also observed.
In agreement with the LEED, the structure was confirmed by STM as (4,1;-4,4) and its reflection (-4,1;4,4).
It is likely that H-bonding is important in stabilising the structure and evidence can be seen for C-H-O bonding within the unit cell.

In comparison with bulk or ribbon structure, the spherical NiO particle may have larger specific surface area and shorter charge transfer distance, which is beneficial to the improvement of electrochemical capacitive property.
All of these peaks can be successfully indexed to (1 1 1), (2 0 0), (2 2 0), (3 1 1) and (2 2 2) crystal plane of the face-centered cubic NiO crystalline structure (JCPDF fi{TTP}-1279 le no.65-2901; space group: Fm3m).
