Introduction
Unlike ductile materials, (quasi)brittle materials often undergo sudden failures without any prior warning.
The numerical modeling of the onset of such catastrophic failures is further complicated by the presence of a strong size dependence in the mechanical response of such materials [1, 2, 3].
A numerical model must capture the multiscale nature of the damage phenomena in order to reproduce the experimentally observed size effect in quasibrittle materials.
