The nutrient granules can be coated by organic (biodegradable) polymer and fertilizers coated with inorganic materials such as sulfur or mineral based coatings.
The materials used to prepare the matrices can also be classified into hydrophobic materials such as rubber, polyolefins and hydrogels, which are hydrophilic and reduce the solubility of fertilizers, causing severe water retention.
