PREFACE The XXII International Materials Research Congress (IMRC) was held in Cancun Mexico from 11 to 15 August 2013.
It was organized by the Sociedad Mexicana de Materiales (SMM) and the Materials Research Society (MRS).
The aim of the IMRC is provide an interactive forum to discuss and exchange ideas about the advances in synthesis, characterization, properties, processing, applications, basic research trends, corrosion prevention, and more, all related to the area of materials science and engineering.
This special volume of Materials Science Forum contains selected papers presented in this symposium.
Finally, but not least, we would like to thank all the authors for their valuable contributions to the journal.

This paper summarize idealized theoretical studies of bicomponent particle packing parameters, affecting the phase and pore structure of the obtained materials.
Introduction Random packings of spheres have many reflections in materials science.
Real materials, such as oxides or sulfides, include at least two elements with atoms of two different sizes.
In spite of the great importance of the problem for materials engineering, only general algorithms have being proposed; they give satisfactory approximations in some selected cases.

The quality control for analyzing process was based on Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) of soil (GSSI-CSS8).
According to the change characteristics of heavy metals and grain size with historical materials, the pollution history which was recorded by Core YLJ-40 from West-branch-way can be divided into three stages: The first stage is about from 1920 to 1940 (84.5-66cm): The fluctuating range of content is relatively wider.

As a result the polishing temperature could be reduced to 324~360℃ with the max MRR (material removal rate) of about 2.3µm/h.
It indicates that the friction plays an important role in the material removal.
