Addition of second phase to Al2O3 is an important toughening mechanism of ceramic tool materials.
So the study of grain boundaries in ceramic materials plays an important role in optimizing the mechanical properties.
The grain growth determines the final microstructure and influences the mechanical properties of ceramic tool materials.

Iron, calcium, and lutetium oxides are considered contamination which can be reduced by using high pure materials.
Those materials were not used in the present work since we were only investigating the process parameters.
Figure 1 shows the micrographs of the starting materials after milling in different conditions.
These materials can be considered potentially useful for applications in radiotherapy treatment.
