A new type of foam fractionation column with spiral internal had been designed for enhancing the foam drainage and thus for the removal of minute hazardous materials.

This often leads to joint strengths considerable below the tensile strength of the base materials.
Hence, in a first step the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering has investigated the applicability of friction stir welding for joints between the die cast magnesium alloy AZ91 and the rolled aluminum alloy AA5454.
The curves measured on the two alloys near the butt weld are close to that of the pure materials.
