A novel X-ray technique was used, exploiting synchrotron radiation at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory, to investigate the growth stresses in α-Al2O3.
Experimental Method In-situ strain measurements were performed using x-ray diffraction (XRD) exploiting synchrotron radiation at beamline 12BM at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory.

The extent of stray grain formation ahead of the advancing solidification growth front was calculated based on the model of Gäumann et al [13].
The model was used to calculate Φ, the area fraction of new equiaxed grains (stray grains) that nucleate and grow ahead of the advancing dendrites.
Since the formation mechanism for stray grain formation during weld solidification is based on the extent of constitutional supercooling ahead of the advancing solidification front, changes in composition which reduce the extent of constitutional supercooling will help to improve the resistance to stray grain formation.

The failure of the outlet valve mechanism impedes the emission of waste, causing stagnation and consequently, their dehydration by decantation (there is relative dehydration of the lens as one ages; the lens ages, alpha-crystalin is converted into insoluble albuminoid; as the lens ages potassium content decreases, the gamma-glutamylcysteinyl glycine decreases in advanced age and leads to cataracts [4]), the viscosity of the mobile media in the lens accumulates and increases degrading the process of mass transfer.
