Banding can lead to undesirable variations in mechanical properties as evidenced by an increase in crack propagation parallel to the rolling direction in plate products [3] and the fact that heat treating of material with banded microstructures can result in internal stresses and distortion due to differences in volume change between adjacent microstructural bands [4].
Long time heat treatments are not economical [3] and often materials with microstructures which mask composition gradients by creating microstructures that appear uniform exhibit properties unacceptable for the intended application.
