The heat flow is then calculated from workpiece dimensions, temperature rise and material properties [5].
The 3D heat transfer analysis used 4 node linear tetrahedron elements along with material data for 42CrMo4 (AISI 4140) specified as thermal conductivity l = 45.1 W/m/K, heat capacity cp = 461 J/kg/K and density r = 7830 kg/m³ [9].
This explains the observation that the increase of heat input is very moderate in comparison to the increase of material removed per time unit (Fig. 6).

Introduction There is currently a revival of germanium as a substrate material for the development of microelectronic technologies [1]-[5].
As an example, Fig. 1 shows the calculated diffusion current density (Jdiff=qni2D 0.5 /τ0.5 NA) at room temperature versus the substrate doping density (NA), for a Ge n+ -p junction, assuming a recombination lifetime τ of 100 µs in the bulk of the material.
