Description: Self-Propagating High-Temperature Synthesis is an attractive advanced technology for the synthesis of a wide variety of advanced materials, including powders and near net-shape products formed from ceramics, intermetallics, composites and functionally graded materials, by exploiting the heat-energy released by the exothermic reaction of raw materials via a self-sustaining combustion wave which propagates from one end of the specimen to the other. When compared with traditional technologies, remarkable savings in energy, time and equipment, and novel forms of equilibrium and non-equilibrium phases and high-purity products can result from using SHS.

Description: From once being of interest only to the aerospace and aeronautical ndustries, superplastic forming (SPF) has recently made inroads into the automotive, rail, architectural, sports, dental and entertainment sectors. However, due to a number of problematic technological issues ranging from die-material selection, die design, surface finish (e.g. alpha casing), differential thinning, temperature-pressure-time cycle determination and overall economy, the application of superplasticity has reached nowhere near its full potential.

Description: Although this volume is ostensibly devoted to diffusion per se, it also covers ionic conduction because this phenomenon, in the often complex and charge-sensitive structures of many ceramics, usually gives important clues as to the routes taken by all migrating species.

The definition of what constitutes a ceramic is also liberally interpreted here so as to include substances which are not normally used as such in the industrial sense. One obvious anomaly is the class of so-called room-temperature superconductors which, perversely, are expected to be used at the opposite end of the temperature scale to traditional ceramic applications. The coverage of research on oxides, carbides and nitrides herein is believed to be as complete as possible, while other possible candidates for inclusion are not necessarily to be found in the 'miscellaneous' section. Silicides, in particular, are notable by their absence.
