Description: This volume of the journal contains papers presented at the 21st International Conference on Solid Compounds of Transition Elements, SCTE 2018 which was held in the Technische Universität Wien, Austria, from March 25 to March 29, 2018. The conference was dedicated to fundamental and applied research regarding structure, crystal chemistry, chemical bonding, as well as with magnetic, thermodynamic, phononic and electronic properties of different classes of intermetallic compounds. Hydrides, borides, carbides, silicides and homologues, pnictides, chalcogenides, oxides and halides (especially those of low oxidation states exhibiting metal or semimetal properties) were in the focus of the conference also.

This book presents contributions covering the more recent applications of Sol-Gel science. Ceramics and films produced from gels were among the first applications developed by early sol-gel researchers. The possibility of tailoring the structure, and controlling particle growth, has permitted ever more advanced materials to be obtained. Several other potential applications were foreseen fifteen to twenty year ago, but their realization became possible only after extensive research on precursors had enabled progress towards the preparation of new pre-forms.

Description: Within the last few decades, advances in solid-state chemistry have resulted in substantial progress towards a better understanding of the solid state, and have even led to the development of some predictive capablities in crystal chemistry. Nonetheless, in more recent years, entirely new ways of thinking have appeared. The term "soft chemistry" or "chimie douce", is often applied in a general manner to refer to these new routes, these new ways of thinking.
