Description: This book contains the abstracts presented at the 20th International Conference on Internal Friction and Mechanical Spectroscopy (ICIFMS20) held in Lausanne 7-10 July 2025. This conference is the 20th of a series that started in 1956 in Providence (USA) until the last one in Rome in 2021. It is an open window on the progress of Science in understanding the elastic, viscoelastic and viscoelastic behaviour of materials. Topics cover a wide domain of modern physics: crystal defect dynamics, magneto mechanical damping, glass transition, and very low damping materials needed for gravitational wave detection and quantum opto-mechanical devices.

Description: The peer-reviewed papers in this special issue of Solid State Phenomena were selected from the 16th International Conference on Internal Friction and Mechanical Spectroscopy, ICIFMS-16, held on July 3 – 8, 2011, in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS).
The proceedings aimed at attracting newcomers to this field of research in order to appreciate the potential of anelastic methodologies in the investigation of advanced materials and new phenomena. Scientists who are already involved in the field will also find here ideas and inspiration for new experiments and theories.

Composite materials are increasingly finding use in diverse applications requiring a wide range of property and performance requirements. Low density, high specific strength and stiffness are the main features that make composite materials most suitable for structural applications. The field covers the concurrent manipulation of the material’s composition and of the internal architecture of the composite in order to obtain the desired properties. The ability to tailor composite materials precisely is of great importance in structural applications. A systematic approach to the optimum tailoring of composite materials is a challenging design problem. The focus should be on the practical design aspects, and that is what is addressed in this special-topic volume.

Description: This treatment of “Time-Dependent Mechanical Properties of Solids” begins with a phenomenological description of the transport of some unspecified entity. It is assumed that the transport is caused by mechanical stresses or temperature fields. This hypothesis is based upon just a few well-established methods such as, for instance, the Zener theory of diffusion and the Inglis equation for stress enhancementof. Using these assumptions, it is possible to deduce formulae for a theoretically based description of several phenomena without referring to any specific process or entity.

In modern society, the demand for means of suppressing the vibration of machine parts and tools is increasing; due to the need to solve noise problems and to improve the accuracy of mechanical systems. The most direct way of coping with such vibration problems is to use high damping materials to make the critical parts.
