Description: Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS).
This special collection focuses on ongoing research topics concerning the light metals aluminum, magnesium and titanium; as well as some of their compounds. Scientific aspects, such as their mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, processing innovations, and also their current applications in the aerospace, automotive or medical fields are discussed. Sociological questions such as environmental challenges and implementation are also focused upon. Finally, computational materials science methods complete this thorough coverage of the light metals.

Description: Current water-treatment technologies require considerable energy consumption. Thus, closely linked to the problem of water shortage is the impending energy crisis. Therefore, intensive research is being aimed at developing water purification processes that are based upon using renewable energy, such as solar energy, rather than energy generated using fossil fuels. There has been an accumulation of reports on the development of photocatalysts, which enable water purification using solar energy as the only driving force. Such photocatalysts, based upon oxide semiconductors, permit the conversion of solar energy into the chemical energy that is required for the oxidation of toxic organic compounds in water. The most promising photocatalyst is titanium dioxide, TiO2, and its solid solutions. The research on TiO2 photocatalysis is multidisciplinary, and progress in this area requires the application of concepts of catalysis and photocatalysis as well as concepts of solid-state chemistry.

Composite materials are increasingly finding use in diverse applications requiring a wide range of property and performance requirements. Low density, high specific strength and stiffness are the main features that make composite materials most suitable for structural applications. The field covers the concurrent manipulation of the material’s composition and of the internal architecture of the composite in order to obtain the desired properties. The ability to tailor composite materials precisely is of great importance in structural applications. A systematic approach to the optimum tailoring of composite materials is a challenging design problem. The focus should be on the practical design aspects, and that is what is addressed in this special-topic volume.

The development of materials designed for application in extreme environments is a very active field of research. In recent years, it has been realized by the materials science community that solutions to demanding applications in different fields can be identified by implementing common materials concepts. Research effort and technological development, driven by application requirements, are now a bridge between apparently separate communities. As first realized by the European Integrated Project “ExtreMat – New Materials for Extreme Applications”, common materials solutions are now being sought and found in the fields of thermal management materials, protective materials, radiation-resistant materials, bonding and interfaces, as well as advanced materials characterization and application-oriented testing.

Description: The world market’s increasing demands for lightweight constructions as a means of reducing fuel consumption in transportation systems, together with shrinking materials resources, are becoming factors of major importance. These aspects are further underlined by current efforts aimed at reducing the greenhouse-gas emissions caused by production processes. In this context, considerate use of energy-intensive materials, such as aluminum, plays a major role.
