Recrystallization and grain growth are mechanisms that alter the microstructure without necessarily altering the phase. They are typically driven by high internal elastic and surface energies though sometimes other volumetric energy terms appear. The topic is important to materials engineers and scientists and geologists alike. The former typically aim to exert control over the phenomena for technological and economic benefit while the latter often seek in these mechanisms the answers to questions regarding events long gone. This collection of peer-reviewed papers brings together the most up-to-date knowledge in this field.

Description: The steel industry continues to remain a highly dynamic sector that must repeatedly face new challenges. During recent years, key factors have been the consolidation of new technologies, the marketing of new steel grades and the development of new products. Innovation, cost-reduction and environmental conservation are challenges that all of the players in the steel world - i.e. industry, research and academia - have to confront every day. Microalloying is one of the principal actors in this struggle.

The technology of microalloying is now, at the end of the 20th century, widely accepted due to the attractive balance of properties which is achievable with the correct control of the interaction between steel chemistry and processing parameters. Microalloying is applied to a broad spectrum of products and has two main goals: to improve the mechanical properties and to save costs.

Description: The book emphasizes the importance of recrystallization and related processes in the development of advanced materials, such as metal-matrix composites, intermetallic and ceramic materials, and thin films. The volume focusses on the control of the microstructure during thermomechanical processing.
