This special volume is dedicated to the science and technology of the semi-solid processing of metals. Since the recognition of the possibility of manipulating metals in the semi-solid state, during the seventies, this fascinating technology has experienced dynamic development and has led to a whole family of new production processes, new equipment and industrial applications. In order to exploit fully the technical and economic potential of these new ideas, it is important to achieve a better understanding of the microstructural development and flow behavior in order to improve material and process modelling as well as process control.

The 20th century was a period during which many new sciences and engineering techniques appeared and evolved, and were applied to industrial applications. Towards the end of that century, however, it was recognized that - in many cases - the industrial technologies that underpin current-day society suffered from wider sociogical deficiencies. The usual engineering approaches began to face many difficulties which arose from the high habitual levels of consumption of energy and resources.. Energy sources, and supplies of various resources, have already begun to diminish in the 21st century. These limitations on energy and resources require science and technology to adapt quickly to this new regimen.

Description: To the materials science community, Texture is an important property which describes the relative orientations of the various material elements which constitute the microstructure. These elements are usually the crystalline grains; each with a different orientation of its crystal lattice. However, morphological textures, such as the arrangement of fibers in a composite material, also have to be considered. In rare cases, the texture is random; with all possible orientations being equally represented in the material. But, usually, processing of the material has caused the texture to become non-random; with a consequent anisotropy of the material properties. Thus, not only metallurgists and materials scientists take an interest in textures, but also physicists, mathematicians, geologists, mechanical engineers and others.
