The proceedings of the July 2013 conference demonstrates the power of atomistic and mesoscopic approaches in fracture and fatigue modeling. Eastern European researchers study deformation and fracture models based on crystal defect behavior, various mathematical models of microstructure and fracturing, the properties and deformation of nanomaterials and biomaterials, and the relation between microstructure and mechanical properties. Five papers from Brno University of Technology detect inhomogeneities and cracks in composites, assess damage in stone blocks removed from an historic bridge, and propose an acoustic emission system with a logarithmic preamplifier for monitoring fractures. Other topics include planar defects and dislocations in C40 and FCC lattices, computer simulation in the electronic packaging process, life prediction of aluminum alloy parts, and mathematical modeling of caries in dental enamel.
