Tool Selection for Machining of Free Form Surfaces

Abstract:

The most important factor that affects the cost of the processing of free-form surfaces are cutting tool data. Therefore in this study, we develop a tool selection algorithm to manufacture of free form surfaces with minimum cost and time. This system can read surface information from IGES file and convert to NURBS and than determine convenient tools. The developed system in this study is implemented with Visual C++ and tested with machining of free form surfaces. As a result of testing, we have seen the tool path with developed system is shorter than conventional methods.
