Tourism: A High Ecological Impact Industry

Article Preview

Abstract:

Touristic Ecological Footprint (TEF) is a new tool of measuring the direct and indirect ecological impact of tourism industry in the context of consumption. A review of 77 TEF papers, published in the literature during the period 2004-2011 in China indicated that tourism industry has higher ecological impact. The Equivalent Local Residents (ELR) of most Chinese destination areas’ TEF was larger than EF per local resident. Transport and food are responsible for the majority of TEF of long-haul and short-haul tourism respectively.
