Crossing Transportation as an Inter-Island Bridge in the North Sulawesi Islands Region

Article Preview

Abstract:

North Sulawesi is known as an archipelagic region comprising several island districts, namely Sangihe, Talaud, and Sitaro (Siau Tagulandang Biaro). The local communities heavily rely on water-based transportation such as pioneer ferries and maritime transport to connect with mainland North Sulawesi, which serves as the economic hub of the region. This study aims to explore regional connectivity, patterns of community movement, the fulfillment of supply-demand for basic goods through ferry crossings, and evaluate the performance of ferry crossings as a government initiative. The analysis employs a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. Findings indicate that connectivity significantly influences the performance of logistics distribution and population mobility, where travel motives and the availability of direct and indirect connectivity routes to the mainland are dominant factors. The need for high accessibility to ports, punctuality, ease of access, smoothness, comfort, and orderliness are aspects of service that need improvement and are substantive recommendations stemming from this research.
