Description: The increasing interest in the use of electrical techniques for the characterisation of material properties indicates the need for a book in which the most important issues in this area are addressed. Consequently, the aim of this volume is to provide a comprehensive description of the electrical techniques used in studies of the semiconducting properties of materials based upon ionic solids, principally metal oxides. A second aim is to present an updated review of the most important data on the defect-related properties of ionic solids, such as the transport of charge or matter, and their electrochemistry in an accessible form.

Description: In spite of the very great progress made in ceramic science, and the elegance and excitement of the research which has been performed, the real driving force for developments in ceramics remains their potential applications. The opportunity for dramatic scientific advances was certainly one reason for the "ceramic fever" of a decade ago, but there is also no doubt that the prediction of an annual market for fine ceramics, amounting to 6 billion Yen played a role.

Description: There is extensive interest in the development of new and improved composite materials. This is particularly true of composite systems based upon metallic and ceramic constituents. As the characteristics of the interface are of central importance, there is a great incentive for an improved understanding of the nature of interfaces between constituents in such composite systems and of the factors that affect their mechanical characteristics.
