Progress made in understanding the structure and properties of silicon nitride based materials has been reviewed every five years at NATO conferences and published in the form of proceedings entitled NITROGEN CERAMICS edited by F.
At the first conference nitrogen chemistry was heavily emphasized and the current understanding of bonding and phase relations of the known compounds, of thermodynamics of powder formation reactions and densification were summarized, and preliminary efforts to understand structure/property relations presented.
Although the presence of residual intergranular phases was noted, their stability and structure were not understood.
Once again significant progress has been made on all fronts, in physics and chemistry of key mechanisms and processes as well as in engineering applications; therefore, it is not possible to list all of the contributions made during this time.
Topics range from powder production, crystal chemistry and phase equilibria, microstructural development in monolithic silicon nitride and nitrogen glass ceramics, atomic structure of interfaces, thermomechanical and electrical properties, to applications including those in semiconductor device technology, reinforced composites, engine and wear components.

Knowing the structure and properties of the liquid phase of Al-Si alloys is essential to understand the nucleation environment during solidification.
The physical properties of liquid metals can be evaluated from the atomic structure of liquids by coupling experiment diffraction data with an appropriate theory [16,21].
The alloy chemistry was confirmed by using Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) and Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy (GDOES).

Structure of the product is characterized by FTIR and 13C NMR spectroscopy.X-ray diffraction indicates that the crystal structure of the native starch is destroyed and disordered structure of cationic starch is formed.
This means that part of starch crystalline structure is destroyed by the cationizing reaction and the amount of amorphism increases.
X-ray diffraction results show that cationization destroys the crystalline structure of starch granules and forms a amorphous structure.

LDHs are derived from the structure of mineral brucite, Mg(OH)2.
Such a structure throws open the possibility of performing a wide range of intercalation chemistry and as a result, they have found extensive use in catalysis, environmental chemistry and engineering [5].
Further, as evident from the LDH structure, they are excellent anion exchange materials and their extensive intercalation chemistry has widespread applications in areas including medicine due to their unique host-guest type structure.
