The XRD diffractogram of cellulose powder (results not shown) exhibited broad diffraction peaks indicating low crystallinity with mesoporous structure (JCPDS 9-432), which may allow greater interaction, sorption and ion exchange of analytes with the sensing material.

The structures of diarylethenes 1o were confirmed by NMR. 1H NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz, TMS): δ (ppm):1.90 (s, 3H), 1.93 (s, 3H), 4.02−4.13 (m, 4H), 6.02 (s, 1H), 7.15 (s, 1H), 7.30 (t, 1H, J = 8Hz), 7.38 (t, 2H, J = 8 Hz), 7.54 (d, 2H, J = 8 Hz).
