There are two primary environmental factors that affect the design of subsea X-tree system: the high external and internal pressure, extremely cold temperatures of the deep-sea environment and high product temperature.

Theoretical investigations have shown that also the local near-tip crack driving force (CDF) may deviate strongly from the far-field CDF, if the material properties vary locally.
