The formed crosslinking structure can increase disorder of the urethane as the hard segment of PU chains, which reduced the hydrogen-bond.
Hydrogen bonds interactions between the soft and hard phases favor ordered structure of chain segment in polyurethane.
As w(APTES) increases, water absorption decreased from 17% to 8%, indicating the forming of siloxane structure enhances the resistance to water.

The chemical reaction is as follows: Firstly, water glass and sulfuric acid form into single silicate acid (positive acid).The single silicate acid is very unstable, and soon is degraded into dimer, oligomer, finally formed to be dispersed particles, and then the particles further get bigger to integrate a chain of hydrated silica and silica gel network structure.
The SEM analysis of the coated paper Characterization of hydrated silicate and the structure of paper coatings From Figure.2 and Figure.3 can be observed: clay and hydrated silicic acid can be a good mix, but also able to obtain good surface smoothness and gloss, for paper coating.
