This paper reviews recent progress in the development of light nano-engineered metals and alloys.
In recent years extensive efforts have been made to improve the strength of engineering materials by nano-design of their structure.
Second phase particles are inherent microstructural elements of engineering materials.
Summary This paper shows that recent advances in strengthening aluminium alloys re-defines limits of their applicability.

Introduction Over a number of decades, considerable effort has been made towards the development of lightweight engineering materials.
Experiments were carried out to study the effect of adding 0.5wt% of α-Al2O3 and γ-Al2O3 powder (Supplied by Inframat Advanced Material, 0.5 µm in size) on the morphology of Si in solidification of hypereutectic Al-18Si alloys at 800 ºC.
