Fig.1 Sketch map of Dongting Lake Water System
For 50 years, conditioned by natural factors as river channel sedimentation and less precipitation, as well influences from engineering constructions as channel straightening of Jingjiang River and Gezhouba Hydro Project, and in particular, water storage and operation of Three Gorges Project, flow and sediment diversion at Four Inlets of Dongting Lake are decreasing and the zero flow period at Four Inlets river course is constantly prolonged.
Since the 1950s, engineering constructions as channel straightening of Jingjiang River, Gezhouba Hydro Project, and Three Gorges Project have vital influence to variations of flow and sediment diversion at Three Inlets of Jingjiang River.
Conclusions Conditioned by natural factors and influenced by engineering construction, flow and sediment diversion at Four Inlets of Dongting Lake continues to decrease, zero-flow period continues to prolong, the Four Inlets river courses and Dongting Lake continues to shrink, and water resources problems in the Dongting Lake area continues to deteriorate.
Forum Vol. 83-87 (1992), p. 119.
