Discrete element method (DEM) is a powerful tool for the study of granular materials.
Numerical method is a complementary method, especially good for microscale analysis of granular materials.
Granular materials are composed of distinct particles which displace independently from one another and interact only at contact points.
The DEM can capture both the macroscale response and the microscale behavior of the granular materials.
