Both types of materials are characterized by low shear strengths
due to planar defects in the crystal lattice.
To obtain a general overview of candidate coating materials different ceramics, cermets and metals were investigated.
Today the mostly applied and studied bioresorbable materials are tricalcium phosphate [TCP, Ca3(PO4)2] and hydroxyl apatite [HAP, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] among ceramic materials [8, 9] and polyglycolic (PGA) or polylactid (PLA) acids among polymers [10, 11].
Calcium phosphates are generally brittle materials, which are applied only in form of powder (TCP) as bone filler material or as coating on metal implants (HAP).
The manufacturing of composite materials which couple the properties of bioceramics and polymers is a promising way to solve some of the problems that these materials meet when they are implanted in the human body.
